Maya Kuriel Single Recap 〜
Maya Kuriel Brings A New Meaning to SummeR
By: Bella Lee
Seattle-born and raised now LA-based, Maya Kuriel has amassed over 2.5 million streams across all streaming platforms since debuting in 2020. Maya is known for having “hypnotic haze of haunting melodies and pulsating beats” within her music which allows for raw and emotional storytelling. With each new release, she’s redefining what pop music can be.
Kuriel has released her latest single, “World Spinning,” with a heavy emphasis on nostalgia. Through the song, she aims to bring out the essence of a childhood summer. However, she focuses on the bittersweet parts of summer rather than the bright and colorful. Instead of a typical summer pop hit, Kuriel has chosen to ground the listener in her song. With a rich bass line and vocal layering, she keeps the listener in the present, but evokes the memory of summer through the song’s structure. Kuriel compels the listener in a desperate tone, as if the memory was fading away. And in the final moments of the song, she pushes to create new memories in order to keep that feeling alive. The song creates an image of a person falling down memory lane. Kuriel’s ethereal voice soothes the listener into wanting exactly what her lyrics say. “Riding on a high…fingertips touching the sky.”
